The Core Four Every Adult Needs
Last Will & Testament
Directs how your assets are distributed after death and — critically — names a guardian for minor children. Without a will, a court makes those decisions. Most states don't require notarization for a basic will, but a self-proving will (which simplifies probate) does require notarization and witnesses.
⚖ Notarization required for self-proving will
Create on EverythingLivingTrusts →Durable Power of Attorney (Financial)
Authorizes someone you trust to manage your finances if you become incapacitated. This must be created while you are still legally capable of signing. Once incapacity occurs, it's too late. One of the most urgent documents on this list.
⚖ Notarization required
Create on LegalNature →Healthcare Power of Attorney
Names someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you can't communicate them yourself. Different from a healthcare directive — this names a person, not just your preferences. You need both.
⚖ Notarization required
Create on LegalNature →Advance Healthcare Directive (Living Will)
Documents your wishes regarding end-of-life care, life support, organ donation, and medical treatment preferences. Gives doctors clear guidance when you can't speak for yourself. Works alongside your healthcare POA.
⚖ Notarization required
